Commercials

20 05 2008

i was watching tv today for a little while.. well apparently i was just watching commercials bc tv has become quite boring! .. and if you asked me what show i watched.. i dont think i could even tell you.. unless its thursday.. bc don’t worry i still watch grey’s! anyway- i decided to write some commentary on a couple of commercials i saw.. bc hey.. why do anything productive?

i saw the new charmin toilet paper commercial.. i think its so funny! they’re talking about how it sucks when you get pieces of toilet paper left behind.. and the parent bear is vacuuming the baby bears butt! hahaha - so cute.

then i saw the V8 commercial.. it always makes me angry.. the guy is at a salad bar and he’s picking unhealthy stuff to put on his salad.. like cheese instead of carrots and then he wants bacon bits.. (eww) but he politely says “honey, can you give me some bacon bits” ..and she says “these bacon bits?” and she hits him on the head!.. which is what they do in all those dumb V8 commercials.. but why!? why all the hitting? and on the head? that hurts!.. her husband seems like a nice guy..and hes not that fat or unhealthy looking- idk why she feels the need to hit him.. for something stupid like that.. what happened to picking your battles? .. they also have the one where the baby hits the mom on the head.. shame.

ok lastly, i just wanna mention the annoying radio ad that i keep hearing while at my rotation site. its for the lottery thing.. money money money.. its soo annoying bc they keep repeating everything they say. its kinda sorta maybe funny the first time you hear it.. but three times a day.. gets irritating.. my preceptor thinks they’re smart tho - bc obv it gets stuck in our head- which is the point- and i agree.. but whatever. “myrna myrna myrna we’re gonna be rich rich rich” lol

5 worst dollar store buys

26 04 2008

Here’s some helpful advice for all you cheapos! lol j/k… the dollar store is always a bit exciting… i mean really - everythings a dollar!! I like going for party supplies and whatnot.. good place to save some dough. i personally wouldn’t buy the things on this list anyway.. because i don’t entirely trust things that are utterly cheap but its still good to know.. especially since some things are turning out to be dangerous!

1. Batteries

Like most people, you probably don’t think twice about what’s inside those ultra-cheap batteries you’re buying, but you should. Most dollar-store battery brands are made with carbon zinc — a far more inferior option than the ones you can buy at the hardware or drugstore, says Tom Merritt, executive editor for electronics review site CNET. “You do not want those,” he says. “It’s one of the original battery technologies, and generally has very poor performance.” You’ll go through the pack of carbon zinc batteries much faster, negating any savings from the cheaper purchase price. Look instead for alkaline batteries. Unfortunately, these batteries are a rare find at dollar stores.

2. Toothpaste

While some personal-care products, like shampoo, can be excellent dollar-store buys, toothpaste isn’t one of them. In June 2007, the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers that many imported toothpastes typically found at dollar stores and other discount outlets contained the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol (DEG) — most commonly used as a thickener in antifreeze. To date, the agency has identified more than 40 hazardous brands, including several counterfeit tubes that look like Colgate.

Repeated brushing with a DEG-laced toothpaste can have serious health consequences, says Rita Chappelle, a spokeswoman for the FDA. “It causes liver and kidney damage and other gastrointestinal problems,” she says. Although import restrictions and recalls were issued to halt the distribution and sale of the tainted toothpaste, consumers still need to remain vigilant. “There could still be some products on shelves,” warns Chappelle. Because it can be tough to tell the problem tubes from the real deal (it’s not as if diethylene glycol is listed as an ingredient), the safest course is to fork over a little more cash for a tube at your local supermarket or drugstore, where there’s more quality control.

3. Electrical Products

“When shopping for holiday lights and extension cords, it’s never a good idea to bargain-hunt for the lowest price,” says Patty Davis, a spokeswoman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Components of electrical products like these can be expensive, and that should be reflected in the price. In the cheapest (often counterfeit) items, the wiring may be undersized, meaning more current goes through than the device can handle, adds Consumer Reports’ Marks. They may also have substandard insulation. At best, these problems make for a faulty product that shorts out. At their worst, the cords can overheat or melt, shocking anyone handling them or even starting a fire.

4. Kids’ Jewelry

Because many dollar-store items are mass-produced by little-known manufacturers in China, there’s a considerable risk of high lead content, cautions Marianne Szymanski, founder of ToyTips.com, a toy safety resource for parents. “Don’t buy kids’ products from the dollar store,” she says. “Until you can be confident that there is no lead, I just wouldn’t.” Especially risky are any items made of metal or that will have close contact with your child’s skin — like jewelry. In 2007, the CPSC announced recalls for more than 1.5 million jewelry products from dollar and discount stores due to high lead content. While just touching the items can’t hurt, kids do tend to put things in their mouths, Szymanski says. And lead-laced paint can easily flake and be ingested.

Any lead consumption is unsafe, potentially affecting the exposed child’s ability to learn and causing behavioral issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Repeated or prolonged exposure to lead compounds the problems. As last year’s widespread recalls proved, dangerous levels of lead can show up in toys from any manufacturer at any price point. Sticking with well-known brands is your best bet for safety, but even that’s not a cure-all, warns Szymanski.

5. Vitamins

Multivitamins are supposed to fill in the gaps in a person’s diet, helping them meet their recommended daily intake of nutrients and bolster their immune system. That is, if the vitamin does what it’s supposed to do. “The dollar store products can be dicey,” says Marks. Because the FDA considers multivitamins a dietary supplement, there’s significantly less oversight when it comes to their composition and effects on the body than there is for prescription medications. In a 2004 analysis, Consumer Reports found that half of the dollar-store vitamin brands it studied contained less of the nutrients claimed on the label, or failed to dissolve properly when ingested. No such problems turned up in similar investigations of major brand names, says Marks.

So…how’s life?

13 04 2008

Whats so great about being an adult? I’d really like someone to tell me. I mean i am in my early 20’s so i was ‘inaugurated’ into adulthood not too long ago… but i already think it kinda sucks. All those ‘responsibilities’ ..ugh. I think the worst part about it tho is all the emotions we’re only lucky enough to feel usually around this age.

Most of us have been through the loss of someone close to - friend or relative. Additionally- too many of us know what its like to have a broken heart. I’m just waiting for mine to turn to stone. On top of that is all this pressure to do things in the time-line we planned out for ourselves. For a lot of us it doesnt happen the way we planned and i guess we need to learn to deal with it. Anyway, guess its better not to complain too much because i’m sure every part of life has its own drawbacks and benefits. Unfortunately, i know some people have been through much worse things than we can imagine going through. Either way though, whatever is happening to us seems like the biggest thing- and it doesnt help much when ppl say ‘its not a big deal’.

Childhood seems like it was great when we look back now, but i can recall having a few complaints back then too.. such as wanting to be independent..which only came around in this phase of life.. I guess the whole other mess comes with the territory. I suppose we should try to be grateful for all that we do have and look forward to the future.. because life is what you make it right? Definately don’t want to make it miserable…even tho some days/events make it seem that way. So what can i say? …Chin up.. i guess. Easier said than done :/

Workplace Politics

5 04 2008

Ok so last time i said that it seems most pharmacists hate their job.. which still may be true.. but now that i am at my third rotation site.. my new conclusion is that its all about WHERE you work and the PEOPLE you work WITH… ‘with’ is a very important word here.. because you need teamwork.

The last hospital i was at was not as glamorous as the one i am in now but the camaraderie at the last one was amazing and it didnt seem like anyone was all that miserable. now this new hospital im at is in a much more affluent neighborhood and the hospital may be mistaken for a hotel but the workers dont seem to be the best of friends and seem like they just want to get in and get out.

Being an intern, i hear a lot of the ‘politics’ that goes on at these different places. Its quite funny because they actually warned us to not get involved in these things at our rotations orientation in school. Anywho, i’ve become friendly with a few of the newly hired pharmacists.. they are still training.. but already have a whole lot of issues after only 2-3 months. They both seem to have come from working in retail for years and are complaining that no one here wants to really train them and that you’d think they would so that the work can be shared. That makes sense to me, especially since, one weak link slows down everything. From what i hear, they all dont want the other to do well..its a competition. One of these women actaully did work in a hospital when she first graduated and she loved it because everyone was caring, willing to teach and had been there for years. On my second day here i heard that most of the new trainees quit early on and the hospital loses that money.. but now i see why. Apparently tho, it is a nice place to work once you know what you are doing and dont need anyones help.. but i dont know.

As of right now, as beautiful as this hospital is, the one in ‘the ghetto’ seems like its a much more fun place to work. Hmm.. well, not that i need to choose either…still have no idea where i’m going to be working a year (and some months) from now… scary. the truth is tho, as much as you should try to be the best at your job, wherever and whatever it is, you still need to help your co-workers and be good to them. you never know whose help you will need and the environment will just be better if you are there for eachother. More importantly, if anyone makes a mistake, the whole place looks bad. Most importantly, if you are dealing with peoples lives, you better put politics aside, and do whats right… how could you not want to train these people to be able to give the best care? Well, i guess i still have a lot to learn…

Plan B is your Plan A?

31 03 2008

 plan B

Whyyyy are so many ppl coming for plan B over and over?? why dont you just get on birth control? bc come on! after you’ve come 5 times in a month.. i think its safe to say you’re accident prone!! lol.

well whatever.. if you want to keep taking the risk and relying on Plan B .. go ahead and shell out the $50 every time… the thing that makes me mad tho is medicaid!!! ugh!!!!! are you serious!?!? you get that stuff for FREE when you flash you’re Benefit card!! .. when us schmoe’s have to pay big bucks for it.. UNFAIR! and their is NO CAP.. you can come every other day and we have to just hand it over bc u have the all-powerful card. who makes up these rules!??! i get it… we don’t want ppl who cant afford a child to not be able to afford the thing that may prevent them from having one.. ok fine.. but seriously…. ppl are really coming as often as they plz gettin it like candy.. free candy! lol.. well.. i plan to make a few phone calls..so at least i can say i tried.. bc get real.. if i had no morals.. and were on medicaid.. i’d rake em up & sell em 20% off!! what a profit!! can run a whole side business on it..

ok i’m done.. but i’m def gonna make a call …just because i dont take advantage of the system doesnt mean im gonna sit here like a sucker and do nothing.. sure it wont make a diff.. but i’ll feel like less of a sucker… and thats good.. right?

Review :

“I thank God that  Murat kept his sanity in the hell of injustice and torture of nearly 5 years in Guantanamo so he could tell his story. May it be studied in every school and college in Europe and the USA. May it help to close down all the illegal and secret prisons and camps, as well as Guantanamo, and restore the prisoners to their families. I am sure Murat’s book will educate a whole generation about justice and the defense of human rights.” — Vanessa Redgrave

nut

27 02 2008

“sometimes you feel like a nut..sometimes you don’t” .. thats what they say or used to say in those almond joy/mounds commercials. it’s so true tho.. people are so moody.. including myself. we can be so naturally high that its annoying (esp. in my case) or sometimes.. just not.. and often times its for no apparent reason.. well atleast its good to be high (the drug-free way) as in just nutty. if i were a nut though.. i dont think i would choose to be an almond.. maybe a cashew? lol..

and i’m not actually sure if thats what the hershey people meant.. i mean obviously they mean sometimes you feel like having nuts and sometimes you dont want them which is why you can still choose one of the two because they are both still full of coconut goodness (yum!). obviously its not like people crave nuts when they are in a crazy mood! haha.. imagine? “i’m feelin wild…pass the peanuts!!” lol

that reminds me.. life must be tough for people with severe allergies to nuts.. sorry for those folks.. you probably can’t have either because they’re likey made in the same place and even a little bit of it would make you go into anaphylactic shock… and thats not cool.. def not worth the coconut goodness.. sorry.
